Programs that build energy efficient homes in poverty stricken countries?
Are there any existing programs that build homes for the poor in developing countries, not just reconstruct the tiny shacks that the people live in, but replacing the homes with energy efficient homes so as to solve two problems at once. I really need to know if a program similar to this exists already. thanks BugYA- No, not really. I was wondering if there was a program in the UN that had volunteers and experts rebuilding homes and powering them using alternative sources- solar power, wind power, etc.

You mean a program that build state of the art homes for people who can't afford it in underdeveloped nations and are paid for by Americans who can't afford them either. Added: Who funds most of the UN?

Prefabulous + Sustainable: Building and Customizing an Affordable, Energy-Efficient Home
Prefabulous + Sustainable: Building and Customizing an Affordable, Energy-Efficient Home
Prefabulous and Sustainable dispels the negative myths associated with prefab homes and shows the reader how beautiful and remarkably green prefab homes are. In this guide to prefab home-building author Sheri Koones, demystifies the prefabricated house by using 25 unique homes to showcase how factory-built homes are greener, more efficient, sturdier, and more cost-effective than site-built homes. The book is divided into 3 categories—green, greener, greenest—and the homes featured vary in style, design, type of construction, and size. All of the homes included in Prefabulous and Sustainable have been customized to create a level of sustainability beyond the inherent qualities of prefab. Written in an easy to understand and approachable style, author Sheri Koones walks the readers through each of the homes, explaining the materials, strategies, and systems used to create a sustainable living environment.

What government grants would be available to a small business that manufactures energy efficient homes?
I've been researching this for a while now, and can't find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know anywhere I could find a list of available grants? Thanks!

Congratulations on building with a conscience! I don't know of any specific ones, but I'd suggest you start talking to the folks at City Hall. These days, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient are very HOT words, so there MUST be programs that encourage companies to provide this kind of option! Don't get discouraged if the first person you speak to has no clue - you can always ask, "is there someone who specialises in energy-efficient buildings? Maybe a department? How about the department who gives rebates for buying energy-efficient appliances?", etc. And each time you meet someone, thank them for their help and again ask if they have pointers to other people you can speak to! Here in Canada, I know I've heard of builders receiving all kinds of awards for energy efficient buildings - I suspect the same is true around the world today! Good luck, FF

How do affordable, energy efficient homes protect the environment?
helpp please

Very often the low-income housing available is very high in terms of energy usage. If you rent, you do not control the type of heating or insulation, and the owner has no real incentive to improve either. Insulation programs are helpful, but never give full coverage. Renters won't install solar or wind. Individual units can install solar or wind and even generate power. Solar's far less expensive than it was, and wind has great potential, although no wind/heavy wind can shut down a mill and migratory birds are being decimated by wind turbines. The birds seem to get disoriented and fly right into the blades. Offshore turbines have been proposed for the East Coast, outside of migratory bird patterns but close to the urban areas where power is most needed. Greener production methods would also decrease solar's environmental impact. Coal is what we rely on most and is a huge factor in global warming. "Clean coal" is a myth manufactured by the industry - wind and solar, even now, are far less destructive. We need to refactor how we define costs, to include the environmental damage caused. And we need the laws to back that up. Anything less is seriously irrational.
